Janelle McClain with studentJanelle McClain is in her 5th year of teaching Special Education at NREP. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Special Education endorsement on her teaching license. Janelle chose to become a special education teacher because she loves working with children and wants to make a positive difference in their lives. For Janelle, one of the most rewarding parts of teaching is watching how much students grow, not only physically, but also academically, throughout the year. “It is such a good feeling to watch the progress of students, even the small moments, because those moments are the ones that bring more opportunity for learning and inspiration,” she said.

NREP studentJanelle’s students have a wide range of abilities and require a highly-structured learning environment with copious amounts of repetition throughout their school day. Janelle and her team create learning experiences filled with music, sensory exploration and innovative play, along with fine and gross motor activities. Her classroom uses adaptive and assistive technology devices like a brailler, light box, adaptive books, and a variety of ability switches. These devices give the students the ability to communicate as they engage and participate in activities. “There’s a great sense of teamwork in my classroom. I enjoy collaborating with my aides and school therapists in ways that provide individualized structured learning,” she said. Upon visiting Janelle’s classroom, one can clearly see that she takes pride in promoting a caring and enriching classroom environment, where students can feel safe as they learn, while also building their independence.

NREP studentWhile her job is very challenging and demanding, Janelle takes joy in bonding and forming special relationships with her students. She looks forward to each day with them, where she can do her best to help them overcome challenges and be more independent.

Thank you, Janelle, for all you do to educate and inspire. You, your team and classroom deserve a shout out...your dedication does not go unnoticed!
