DecorativeIn the spirit of celebrating Digital Learning Day, the Computer Science Exploritories class at NREP made digital pixel art using Google Sheets. Students learned different ways to organize, display, and analyze data using digital formatting to code. Students were tasked with setting up a spreadsheet using cell, row, and column dimensions to form a grid, as well as selecting a pixel art image to guide their work. They created a color palette using conditioning formatting rules to assign colors and then entered formatted values into their spreadsheet to replicate their image of choice. To finalize the project, the students revised their conditional formatting rules to match text and fill colors of the individual cells to customize their digital masterpiece.

This project, although challenging, provided an opportunity for students to work together and problem-solve using critical thinking skills. The lesson also sparked thought-provoking discussions about ways digital tools are used in real life. For instance, graphic designers use sheets to track artwork creation for clients. One of the students mentioned that when he becomes a chef, he could use forms to track the popularity of his signature dishes. Another student, who wants to be an astronaut, could use digital tools and his drawings to calculate the mission details.

The staff at NREP are so proud of the students for completing this challenging lesson. It is a joy to see students excited about their learning and progress. As an educator, it is extremely rewarding to hear students express their enthusiasm for a project and ask for additional opportunities to practice those newfound skills.
