DecorativeCameron Sherman, an 11th grade student at NREP, has helped pump up school spirit by designing a cool t-shirt for staff. Cameron designed the t-shirt after being inspired by seeing the new Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) posters that are displayed around the school. When asked what inspired him to design the t-shirt, Cameron said, “I wanted to show kindness to all those who show me respect, talk to me and help me.” Cameron chose the color blue for the shirts because blue is his favorite color. The NREP Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) heard about Cameron’s t-shirt design and kindly purchased the t-shirts for the staff to help build enthusiasm, moral, and a sense of community.

The hallway posters were designed by preschool teacher, Brandy Lewis, who is also a member of the PBIS Planning Committee. The Committee has been working to fill the hallways at NREP with colorful art and positive wording that inspire a happy, safe school environment. The school mascot is a Phoenix and Phoenix's are rising up all around the school (see below for some of the incredible art, most created by Brenda Wallace).

The main focus of PBIS is to provide a transparent structure for all expected behaviors at NREP. Staff actively teach, model, and reinforce schoolwide expectations that explicitly focus on three simple rules: respect, responsibility and safety. As students demonstrate these values, they earn phoenix feathers.

Phoenix feathers are a tangible and immediate form of recognition, used at the discretion of individual staff members, to reward and acknowledge positive student behaviors. Earned feathers are turned into the office to enter students into drawings to win free lunches, and other prizes. According to Greek mythology, the Phoenix is a bird that cyclically regenerates itself by rising up from its own ashes, so it cannot be destroyed. Here at NREP, we are proud to be a Phoenix, where we rise up strong and wise.
