Deputy RuizAs part of the Frederick County Public Schools commitment to provide and maintain a safe school environment for students and staff, NREP is pleased to welcome Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Angel Ruiz as its School Resource Officer. Deputy Ruiz serves both NREP and Dowell J Howard.

Deputy Ruiz is a 29-year veteran of law enforcement. He spent twenty years working as a criminal investigations officer in Washington, DC, and four years as a patrol officer for Frederick County. Deputy Ruiz also took on the responsibility of instructing other officers on defensive tactics and techniques, firearms use, driver safety and report writing while working in Washington, DC.

Deputy Ruiz is a retired Master Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He was aboard the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Yuma and stationed on the USS George Washington and in Okinawa, Japan. He was deployed to the Middle East (Turkey, Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar) as a human intelligence officer. Deputy Ruiz is currently retired as a reservist.

Deputy Ruiz’s presence at NREP has provided staff with a sense of security while he’s in the building. Brandy Bennett, behavior specialist at NREP, loves how he is breaking down barriers with some kids who are habitually intimidated and have a fear of authority. Other staff members appreciate that he is investing in the students on a daily basis and talking with them when not in crisis. “He truly is making an impact,” said Aaron Santamaria. “Building a rapport and developing a connection with the students has been very rewarding,” said Deputy Ruiz. He added, “I love it when the students approach me and are no longer intimidated by my presence. For some, I have become their school dad. I can sense the change in attitude toward me since day one changing their perception about officers. I have been communicating to them that I am here to keep them safe.” NREP is incredibly honored to have Deputy Ruiz as part of their school family.

Deputy Ruiz resides in Stephens City with his wife and their two sons. He has a love of all things sports-related and is active in his church and community.
